Dearest Readers,
Perhaps due to the confluence of religious holidays in the coming days, there is only a smattering of cross-cultural events to report on, but check out the extended calendar listing for a generous number of events thereafter.
On Saturday, fans of anime, manga, and gaming are sure to enjoy the Otaku Smash Matsuri event at the Handerly Hotel. The House of Scotland will hold their annual Tartan Day
to celebrate all things Scottish. And there will be a free
multicultural celebration at the updated Pepper Park on the National
City Bayfront.
Music options include the Grossmont College Afro-Cuban Ensemble concert on Monday, the Hot 8 concert at the Belly Up (also on Monday), and the Mexican fusion band (Son Jorocho and Spaghetti Western???) band Olas Perdidas at the Kroc Center next Thursday.
Theatrical options include August Wilson's Fences at the Old Globe (opens tomorrow) and, for the kids, Disney's MOANA Jr the Musical at the Theatre for Young Professionals, which gets underway next Friday.
Assorted other events of a cross-cultural hue include tonight's performance by Mexican stand-up comedian Carlos Ballarta at Balboa Theatre, Thursday's Warwick's hosted book talk with Marie Benedict who will share her new book Daughter of Egypt, a lecture on Art Deco Paris at the Athenaeum Music & Arts Library (also next Thursday), and San Diego French American School's screening of the film Trois Amies, next Friday night.
Lastly, the Worldview Project, which produces this newsletter every week (and does lots of other stuff too!), is a non-profit organization. Supporting cross-cultural awareness, understanding, and engagement has never been more critical than it is now. As you may have noticed, we don't annoy you with advertisements or constant fundraising appeals. But we need your support to continue to do what we do. In particular, we are seeking our readers' help in funding the further development of our Cultures in the Classroom™ curriculum project to inspire children to connect with and appreciate the wonder of cultures around the world. You can show your support by clicking on the "Donate to the WVP" button above and making a tax-deductible donation to the WVP. No donation is too small— even a dollar would be appreciated!
